Getting direction

In my work I often get the chance to facilitate meetings where organizational leaders discuss their vision of where they are going. The people in these meetings talk about where their organization is going in the next 1-5 years. This vision process helps the leaders and the employees to share a big picture view of the future direction of their organization.

When it comes to God’s direction, it would be so nice if we could know for sure what He has in mind for us. There are moments when we do feel sure, and other moments when we wonder, “Am I doing what God would have me do?”

After His resurrection, Jesus talks to Peter on the beach. While there, Jesus gives Peter clarity on the direction and purpose He has for Peter’s life. In John 21:15-17, Jesus tells Peter to do three things:

  • Feed my lambs
  • Tend my sheep
  • Feed my sheep

When I was a child and I heard this verse, I did not really understand it. Now, as an adult, I see the words and the meaning connects with me. The sheep Jesus was referring to were other people. And the feeding was the “feeding of God’s word”.

In today’s world, wouldn’t it be nice to sit on the beach while Jesus told us the direction of our lives…where He sees us working for His kingdom?

Since I haven’t had any time at the beach lately, I use my prayer time, in any location, to ask for God’s guidance.
