The Bad Relationships weed

The final post in this series on the “weeds” and distractions in our lives is on the Bad Relationship weed.

When I was a teenager I observed a friend talking very rudely to his parents. I was also encouraged by him to question my own parent’s authority. It didn’t go over very well…thankfully my parents corrected me on this behavior, and I was the better for it.

I had been around a “bad relationship weed” for too long, and I let it distract me from my focus on God. God commands us to honor our father and mother, and I let a bad relationship weed push me in the wrong direction.

“And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it.” Luke 8:7

Every day those weeds try to break back in…sprout up and around us and distract us from our God. Every day as we search Him in prayer for defense against those weeds, we have God’s assurance.

In an earlier post I mentioned these verses, and they still apply here:

First, God knows our limits…

1 Corinthians 10:13 says: “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

Second, God knows our fears…

Deuteronomy 31:8 says: “The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Third, God will be your strength…

Exodus 15:2a says: “The Lord is my strength and my song; He has become my salvation.”
