The same direction

In a recent sermon, our pastor included this quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, To love does not simply mean to look at one another but to look together in the same direction”.

This is a lesson that married couples can begin to learn very early. Many decisions have to be made early in a marriage that can be opportunities for couples to look together in the same direction, such as:

  • Where we will live?
  • Do we want to have children?
  • How will we manage our finances?

Recently, after I finished a presentation based on my book, I had several people approach me with questions. One young man spoke of the struggle he and his wife experienced when they tried to agree on how to manage their finances.

Not looking in the same direction as a couple can cause a lot of stress in a marriage. You certainly don’t have to agree on everything. It is important to talk through important issues, however, and it often can bring you closer together as you find your common ground.

Are there areas in your marriage where you and your spouse are looking in the same direction? If so, spend some time thanking God for this blessing in your marriage.

Are there areas in your marriage where you and your spouse are not looking in the same direction? If so, spend some time asking God to guide both of you in the direction that honors Him, and to bless your conversations with each other with love and patience.

And please share any other suggestions you have right here!
