Instantly clean

1 John 1:7 “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”

When I go through a car wash with my van, I notice all of the steps that are taken before the van is clean. In order to get my vehicle clean, it takes money, time, tools, cleansers and people.

After I pay for the carwash, an attendant brushes off the front and back of the van with soapy water. Then the attendant pushes the side mirrors in. Next the van is sprayed with water, and soon after sprayed with soap. Brushes turn in circles as they clean the sides of my vehicle, and washers flow over the top to clean the windshield and roof. Then the water sprays again to clean off the soap and dirt, and finally the hot air blows onto the van, spraying away the moisture. It usually takes about five minutes to go through the whole process.

The miracle of being washed clean by Jesus, however, takes one instant. God doesn’t require payment from us, because Jesus already paid the price for us with His life. God doesn’t need soap, brushes, or time. He cleans us up and makes us new…immediately. All of the hard work is done by God. We get all of the benefits of being clean, and God the Father takes care of the cost, dirt, and exertion.

When being cleansed by our Lord and Savior is even simpler than the quickest car wash, why are we still hesitant? Why do we hold onto our sin and our shame? Why do we leave the dirt on us, when He can clean us in one moment?
