Gardens: Betrayed by a kiss

Of all the research I did on gardens in scripture, the most difficult one to read is the one where Jesus is betrayed, in a garden, with a kiss.

“Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane. When they got there, he told them, ‘Sit here while I go over there and pray.’” Matthew 26:36

Then, after Jesus prayed, the betrayal took place. In Luke 22:47-48, we’re told, “While Jesus was still speaking, a crowd came up. It was led by Judas, one of the twelve apostles. He went over to Jesus and greeted him with a kiss. Jesus asked Judas, ‘Are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?’”

The Garden of Gethsemane was the place where Judas betrayed Jesus, and Jesus was taken away by soldiers. Instead of a place of peace, it became a place of sadness and fear.

In my next post I’ll share one more place in scripture that refers to a garden.
